About Us

CHAPTER HISTORY

The Southern University Bay Area Alumni Chapter was founded in 1962. The first official meeting was held in San Francisco, CA at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Ben Harbor. George McQuillister became the first President of the SU Bay Area Alumni Chapter. The chapter business meetings were hosted at the homes of various SU Alumnus that resided in both San Francisco and Oakland. Oakland eventually became the official domicile of the Southern University Bay Area Alumni Chapter. In 2002, St. Benedict Center, became the official meeting place for the SU Bay Area Alumni Chapter located at 82nd Avenue & Bancroft, Oakland, CA 94605. The SU Bay Area Alumni Chapter received its IRS Public Charity status in 2006 as a 509 (a) (2) non profit organization.

OUR MISSION

The Southern University Bay Area Alumni Association mission is to recruit, advise, retain, and graduate students from the San Francisco Bay Area, who will insure the legacy of our beloved Alma Mater. We also raise funds to financially support those students from the Bay Area that are attending The Southern University System. Southern University and A&M College is a comprehensive institution offering four-year, graduate, professional, and doctorate degree programs, fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). The University today is the only Historically Black Land Grant University System in the United States.
